This is the story of Hyundai Capital’s rookie setter Lee Hyeon-seung (22, 190cm). Lee Hyeon-seung, a graduate of Hanyang University, was nominated by Hyundai Capital as the second pick in the first round of the rookie draft. Gradually getting a chance to play from the second round, he has established himself as the main setter, and has emerged as a strong candidate for the rookie of the year, leading the team that stayed at the bottom last season.

Hyundai Capital won a complete set score of 3 to 0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-18) in an away game against Woori Card in the 6th round of the Dodram V-League Men’s Division in the 2022-2023 season held at Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul on the 24th. The recent five-game winning streak continued.

Lee Hyeon-seung started the game that day and led the team’s attack. He led the team’s victory by leading a triangular formation leading to Heo Soo-bong (17 points), Jeon Gwang-in (11 points), and Oreol (10 points).

Hyundai Capital ranked first in the regular league for the first time this season after winning the Woori Card match on the 21st. However, the next day (22nd), Korean Air defeated OK Financial Group and fell to second place.

With this victory, they regained their first place. They harvested 3 points and recorded 21 wins, 10 losses and 64 points, knocking Korean Air (62 points) down to 2nd place and rising to 1st place again.

Regarding his feelings about regaining 1st place after the game, Lee Hyun-seung said, “If I lose even one game, I will lose 1st place, and if I win, I will go up.” I am working with a joyful mind rather than a burden in the fierce competition for leadership.

He’s the youngest on the team, but he has to lead his brothers on the court. From the first season of his debut, he must have been given a heavy burden of responsibility. However, Lee Hyun-seung laughed, saying, “In the beginning, there was a lot of pressure, but when I exercise, his older brothers prank me like friends, so I’m doing it comfortably.” He added, “The hyungs are all talented, but there are many times when I feel like I can’t save them. So I tend to go to the hyungs first and ask them a lot.”

Lee Hyun-seung, who recalled the day he started for the first time, said, “I think I was more nervous than during the draft. I was more nervous.” However, after adjusting to the professional stage before he knew it, when asked if it was difficult to digest more games than in high school, he joked, “It’s okay because I’m young.”

Under the guidance of Hyundai Capital manager Choi Tae-woong, who made a name for himself as a great setter during his active career, he is growing rapidly. Lee Hyun-seung said, “The director gives instructions whenever it’s important. He said that his sense is enough.”

Director Choi praised Lee Hyun-seung, who has shown rapid growth since his debut season. After praising, “I’m doing much better than expected,” he raised his voice, saying, “It’s true that I lack experience, but my role is to create a good environment so that I don’t feel pressured.”

Then, regarding the composition of the Rookie of the Year competition with Kim Jun-woo (Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance) this season, he raised Lee Hyun-seung’s hand, saying, “As far as I know, I remember that a top team player received (Rookie of the Year).” When Lee Hyun-seung was also asked if he was greedy for the Rookie of the Year award, he replied, “It seems that the hyungs are pushing me too. I want to receive it.” 

Lastly, he showed confidence in the fierce competition he is currently fighting against Korean Air. Lee Hyun-seung raised his voice, saying, “I don’t know which team Korean Air will lose to, but first we have to win all 6 rounds.” He continued, “It is true that there is a sense of pressure, but the team may lose because of me, so I will work with a sense of responsibility.”
